The line is not straight

This project explores classification, drift and found objects. To carry it out I immersed myself in texts examining collecting through history, and how classifications are bound to a tradition of botanical expeditions. "Linnaeus’s Systema Naturae builds a complete archive gathering the structures of plants and methods for collecting and organising them in herbaria (...) this study of the natural relied not only on export, but also employed various tools such as navigational charts, maps, illustrations and, above all, botanical plates."

Out of this context came the various pieces that make up the project, among them "Mapas Residuales". The work consists of eight large-format drawings in ink on parchment paper. They came from the detailed reproduction of waste I collected over six months. In making new groupings, I decided to establish categories at the very moment of drawing: lines, zeros, the silhouettes of the papers, and so on. The first is the drawing of a crumpled receipt, and I arranged them so as to produce a reading "in layers".

The drawing becomes a tracing. These maps are representations of ideas about a partial perception of space and territory, guided by different interests —economic, political, geographic, topographic. This mobile archive proposes a review from a different angle: not space itself, but what is found within it, elements that happen to mimic the cartographic line.

Some elements can be made out more clearly than others, revealing the many forms they take on after their useful life, which mostly consisted of storing or conveying information. Receipts can be distinguished, scraps of paper with margins, jotted numbers. The drawings are set one behind another, dissolving any frontal reading. Only the first and the last can be seen head-on; the rest, from the sides.

Out of this exercise came another 20 drawings in different formats and 2 intaglios.
